What is FUE?

The follicular unit extraction method (abbreviated FUE for the English term “Follicular Unit Extraction”) is a method of obtaining follicular units, generally consisting of groups of one to four hairs, for hair transplantation.

In this method, individual follicular units are extracted directly one by one from the donor area of the patient coequally, in order to obtain a homogeneous quantity on the area concerned. The follicles are selected by the specialist according to certain factors such as thickness, structure and length.

The steps are performed under local anesthesia, so the process is completely painless.

The process of hair transplantation with the FUE method

• Extraction (collection) of the grafts from the donor area.
• Micro-incisions (Canalization)
• Implantation of the grafts into the canals.

Extraction of the grafts

A distinctive feature of the FUE method is that the hair follicles can be transplanted with an extremely high esthetic success rate. In the FUE method, the follicles are extracted one by one through the rotating nozzles.

This allows the follicles to be extracted with minimal distortion.

For maximum success, it is important to properly determine the diameter of the nozzle according to the length of each follicular unit. It is best to use a diameter of 0.7 mm to 0.9 mm, depending on the number of hairs in the graft. The hygiene of the needles as well as their single use are elements that have a significant impact on the success of the operation. Another important point is the precise extraction of the follicles to avoid damage.

Treatment Summary

Micro-incisions (Canalization)

During canalization, classic FUE uses a metal nozzle called a “slite”.

Nowadays, modern clinics use the sapphire blade, which is much more precise and allows better healing. Using the sapphire blade makes it easier to determine the angle and appropriate direction of the graft.

When channeling in the recipient area, it is very important to consider the direction and angle of the existing hair in this area.

By using the sapphire blade, the healing process is much shorter. Again, the blades should only be used on one patient during a single procedure.

Implantation of the grafts

In the final phase, transplantation of the hair follicles, the grafts are implanted one by one at an angle of 40-45 degrees into the incisions made in a direction that allows precise placement. The three phases have certain technical features. The most important technical feature in all phases and the key word for success is undoubtedly experience.

FUE is a hair transplantation technique that leaves no traces and requires no sutures.
